SCIENTIFIC IMPACTS

DISCOVERIES AND ACHIEVMENTS

Throughout Sofia Kovalevskaya’s life, she made two major scientific achievements. Researching and developing ideas, she discovered many rules and patterns in differential equations, especially on the existence theorem for partial differentiation proposed by Cauchy. Sofia simplified Cauchy’s work into systems of nonlinear partial differential equations. The resulting theorem was called “The Cauchy-Kovalevsky Theorem”. This theorem is often applied to the commonly used heat equation. The other ground breaking and extraordinary discovery was in a paper she wrote on the rotation of an unsymmetrical solid body around a fixed point, where its center of mass is not on an axis within the body. This form of rotation became known as the Kovalevsky top. Although these are the two most remarkable achievements, Sofia published an overall total of ten scientific papers on mathematics and mathematical physics.
